The effects of Studying

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie.  The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together.  The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

Chunk #1:  Comment the effect of the setting on the characters within the novel.

Chunk #2: discuss the effect a setting on you, including imagery (lots of adjectives) and a simile or a metaphor as you describe the land.

The setting effects them by putting them in a good mood because the scenery is so nice. The setting also changes by adding rooftops which are houses when the people think that the setting was better as it was in natures true form. A setting I wish I could see and one that I love dearly is at the motocross track. Being at the motocross track is so fun, because the track is right next to the river bank and we park in the sand. There are trees and the track has some parts in a field, but then it goes over to the river bank. The water is always cold and there is always a small breeze like a cold winter blow that goes by since the river is so close.

Henry vs. Forrest

In intenses situations, a person's instinct to run varies because of one's own definition of self-preservation.

Henry ran because he was scared.
Henry ran like a chicken because he was scared. He left all of his platoon and was getting shot at but he was not told to.

Forrest ran because he was told.
Forrest was running because Lt. Dan told him too, but he turned back to save his men and protect his platoon.

Running can be defined as Scared or an Order.

Remembering 9/11

On Sept. 11, 2001 the world was changed forever. The terrorists group Al Queda had sucidist who hijacked four planes and did the most horrifying thing this country has ever seen or heard of. What they did will never be forgotten. Although three planes were successful, and I say successful while gritting my teeth, one was stopped from getting to its destination due to very brave, average citizens.

When the first plane hit one of the towers it was a moment of terror and shock. No one knew exactly what to do at the time and no one had ever thought such a thing could happen.  Then when news came that there were more planes being hijacked the world went into a severe panic.

Just as the shock from the first plane kind of subsided and people began to try and clean when the second plane struck the second tower. After that there was nothing anyone could do. Then it was only a matter of time, before the other two met there destination. The next target was the Pentagon, which was hit and destroyed a whole side of the building. The fourth plane was brought down due to brave citizens who fought the terrorist, but unfortunatly the plane crashed into a field.

Even though it was ten years ago when this act of terrorism happened nobody should ever forget the death, pain, and suffering that everyone had to go through. Another thing is that we should also remember the firemen, policemen, and medics who were there and trying to save as many lives as they could. That is what everyone should remember about 9/11.
